One day, Natalie and her family drove to visit her grandmother in the country. Grandmother Smith lived in the mountains and it was a long drive. This particular day, Natalie and her brother Mike had brought along their homework to do in the car.

One of Natalie's assignments included listing the ways her family could conserve energy while using the car. While they were driving, Natalie's mom told her that one of the reasons they bought this particular car was because it was Energy Effecient (one that uses less gasoline per mile). They were conserving energy by driving the car that uses less gasoline. Cars not only use gas but use oil and tires as well. Dad said that it takes energy to make tires, too.

Natalie's dad also reminded them that he rides in a carpool and that saves lots of energy and money. Mike replied that he and Natalie walk or ride their bicycles when they can instead of asking their parents for a ride.

Natalie said that her teacher thought lots of energy could be saved if people obeyed the speed limits. You can also save energy if you drive smoothly, without sudden stops and starts, which use extra gas. Keeping the car in good running order can also save energy. You should have your cars engine tuned once a year, stated Dad.

Rolling down the windows instead of using the air conditioner is another energy conserving tip. "Grandma taught me that," said Mike. She also goes shopping once a week. She makes a list so that she doesn't forget anything. She is conserving energy by only going to the store once instead of numerous times. Oh look, we're here!
