Ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) provide protection from shocks in damp or wet locations. They work by immediately shutting off the electricity when they detect any loss (leakage) of current that occurs when someone receives a shock.

GFCIs are available in three configurations:

  • as a circuit breaker placed in the main panel
  • as an outlet placed in a receptacle box
  • or as a plug-in to convert an existing outlet
Many electrical codes now require these devices in areas where water or dampness and electrical outlets coexist. Whether required in your location or not, GFICs should replace ordinary outlets in bathrooms, near kitchen sinks, in basements, garages and outdoors.
