Always read appliance manuals and follow the manufacturers’ instructions. Electricity and water don’t mix, so never operate an appliance while standing on a wet or damp floor. (Even if a GFCI is installed, you may receive a severe shock in the time it takes the GFCI to disconnect the power.)

In addition:

  • Avoid touching plumbing or metal objects when operating appliances and never attempt to use a device that sparks or stalls.
  • Keep heat-producing appliances away from combustible materials and unplug them when they are not in use.
  • Always disconnect appliances before cleaning them and never place electrical components in water.
